Substrate
What this plant roots into (or attaches to). The substrate affects both plant nutrition and water chemistry; see each linked page for full effects.
| Substrate | pH effect | Nutrient load |
|---|---|---|
| Inert sand (Pool filter sand) | neutral / inert | none |
| Inert gravel (Aquarium gravel) | neutral / inert | none |
| Aquasoil (ADA Amazonia) | lowers pH | very high |
| Mineralized clay substrate (Seachem Fluorite) | neutral / inert | moderate |
| Dirted tank (mineralized topsoil) (DIY soil substrate) | slightly acidic | very high |
This plant feeds primarily from the water column, so substrate choice matters more for its fish-tank compatibility than for plant nutrition.
With fish
- Plant-eating fish
- safe with plant-eating fish (tough leaves or unpalatable)
- Diggers (corydoras, loaches)
- fine - root system or attachment style handles it
- Root-disturbing fish
- sensitive to root disturbance, plant where roots stay undisturbed
Habitat
Native to India, found growing in marshes, ditches, and shallow water in the Western Ghats and surrounding lowlands. The species (Pogostemon erectus) is an upright stem plant with dense whorls of fine, needle-like leaves arranged along a straight, vertical stem. The conifer-like appearance (it resembles a miniature cypress or pine tree) is distinctive and unlike any other common aquarium stem plant. Under good conditions, the bright green, densely packed leaf whorls create a striking vertical accent. Introduced to the aquascaping hobby in the 2000s from Indian collections, it has become popular for its unique vertical texture. The genus Pogostemon includes many terrestrial species, some used as herbs (P. cablin is the source of patchouli oil). Only a few species in the genus are suited to fully submerged aquatic growth. P. erectus is the most commonly available aquatic Pogostemon alongside P. helferi (downoi) and P. stellatus (octopus plant).
Care notes
Moderate care. Requires moderate to high light for the dense, compact growth that makes the plant attractive. Under low light, the lower leaf whorls shed and the stem becomes bare and leggy. CO2 injection is recommended: with CO2 at 20-30 ppm, growth is steady and the leaf whorls stay tight and green. Without CO2, growth is slower and the lower portions thin out more quickly. Plant stems individually or in small groups of 3-5, spaced 3–5 cm apart so each stem has room for its whorls. Trim tops to maintain height; the cut stems produce side shoots but less reliably than easier stem plants. Rich substrate and regular fertilization (especially nitrogen and iron) support the dense leaf production. Temperature: 22–28°C. pH 6.0-7.5. Soft to moderately hard water. The vertical, conifer-like growth pattern creates a unique textural element in aquascapes, providing visual contrast against rounded-leaf plants and flowing mosses. Best used as a midground accent or a narrow background column. Available from specialty aquatic plant retailers, typically as tissue culture.
